Jesus In Islam
Part 3
"The TRINITY"
Islam asks us to believe in the Absolute oneness of God.
He is the Creator of everything, and is completely separate from His creation. All worship is to be directed towards Him alone. This was the same message brought by all the prophets of God, from Adam till Muhammad, including Jesus.
Jesus never claimed any qualities of divinity, nor did he claim that he deserved to be worshipped. He did not say that he was the “son” of God or part of the “Trinity”, but rather that he was only a servant of God sent to the Jews to bring them back to the true religion, worshipping One God and following his instruction. The majority of the verses in the Quran prove that Jesus was only taken as an object of worship as a result of lies which people invented against him.
The Quraaan says about Jesus, that he never claimed himself to be a god: “They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘God is the Messiah, the son of Mary’ while the Messiah has said, ‘O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. whoever joins other gods with God, - God will forbid him the Paradise, and the Fire will be his abode. There will, for the wrong-doers, be, no one to help.” (Quran 5:72)
The Quran mentions about “Trinity” in a very clear manner in the following verse: “They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘God is the third of three.’ (Rather) there is none worthy of worship except One (God). And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment. So will they not repent to God and seek His forgiveness? And God is Forgiving and Merciful. The Messiah (Jesus), son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger before whom many Messengers have passed away; and his mother was a women of truth, and they both ate food (as other mortals do). See how We make Our signs clear to them; and see where they are turning away!” (Quran 5:73-75).

The answer to a common doubt brought up by the Christians concerning a verse in the Quran where Maryam peace be upon her is described as a god of the Christians. From the tafseer of Qurtubi-

So if it is said: the Christians didn't take Maryam as a god so how is that said about them? So it was said: It was from their statement that she didn't give birth to a man and she only gave birth to a god so it obligated them that they say: It is because of the ascription of some with the equivalent from his birth. So they became obligated with the equivalent of the speakers for it. (1)

(1) Translator's note: Meaning they said she gave birth to a god so she must be a god.

The verse it is explaining is as follows-
( 5:116 )   And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.
