I just tried this on a mix I'm doing now, works perfectly and leaves a little room for tweaking percussion. Brilliant Big Z.

One thing folks need to realize is that asking if reference tracks are considered cheating is a faulty question. Think of any cook who tried to learn how to make their favorite dish. How do you think they learned to do it? Probably by referencing an existing recipe to the letter.

That didn't mean they couldn't put their own creative spin on it. Quite the opposite -- Once they know how the dish is made it frees them up to focus entirely on where they want to make intentional changes and break conventions, just like a musician would in one of their songs. Same goes for any other artistic medium. It's how we learn.

This video isn't suggesting using the exact same 4 songs for every artist or genre. The songs you reference will in itself help individualize your sound. But knowing what and where to change things is much harder to do when you don't know what current conventions are and why many artists end up sounding amateurish.

For those that disagree, you're by no means required to use a reference track. If anything, the fact that others do use them might enable you to sound that much more different from them so it should be a win-win.

This is excellent advice Big Z for those wanting to know how to make the best use out of reference tracks. Thank you for all the incredible information in your videos -- it's helping aspiring producers out a lot. As you mentioned in a previous video, most of us have to dumpster dive for golden nuggets of information so it's amazing to have it all in one place. Looking forward to more.

I've used ADPTR for years now. Never even thought to consider balancing elements in this way by referencing the peaks like this. Very nice.

god bless big z, thank you for showing how to visually mix in this way! it's hard as a beginner to really know what to listen for when mixing, especially if you don't have a good pair of balanced monitors to reference the recording with. I know for a fact after watching a lot of your other videos and trying these trucks my intuition has improved so much. hope to make some bomb mixes with this trick!
