Are Native Plants Really That Important?

Why are we talking about native plants? Well, we took a quick trip up the road from us to the Agrirama in Tifton, Georgia. We met with the President, Mary Alic Applegate, of the Coastal Plain Chapter. Their mission is to educate the public about the importance of native plants to our health and well-being as well as to pollinators and other wildlife. They also strive to promote the conservation and preservation of our native plant habitats by encouraging the planting of native plants in landscapes, woodlands, parks, and gardens. Let's talk about the importance of native plants and Let's Grow Together!

This year I made a huge butterfly garden right in my front yard here in N.Y. I grew from seed the swamp milkweed and the wild bergamot. The swamp milkweed bloomed first year. I started it inside in the winter under grow lights and I also winter sowed it. The monarchs came and layed their eggs on the swamp milkweed and I raised them under netting. The swamp milkweed produced so much seed that I was able to give alot away to many of my gardener friends. Alot of people are uneducated about the land that we all live on. GREAT VIDEO!!!!

Jason Powell, the owner of Petals from the Past, (where y’all had your meet and greet last summer) does a lot of native plants. We toured the nursery last week as our field trip to celebrate finishing the Master Gardener Program. He was explaining a lot to us about growing what grows in your soil not someone else’s. Great place and great tour! He said he loves to get roses from old deserted cemeteries.(With permission) He figures if dead people can grow them, he can. 🫣That was his corny joke. 😊 I hope to see you both there this summer. Glad for the directions you’re taking on your channel. Happy gardening.👩‍🌾♥️☀️

Thanks for another very interesting show! We can all not only help our land by encouraging natives but by NOT planting invasives. These have become so common and are widely used without realizing the detrimental effects these species can have. Many of the plants Southerners have grown up with are now considered invasive: Chinaberry, Bradford Pear, Popcorntree, Nandina, Chinese Privet, Autumn Olive, Mimosa, Japanese Honeysuckle, Bamboo, Nonnative Wisterias, English Ivy, among others. I was recently talking with a lady friend about some landscaping she was planning and a large hedge was in her plans. She asked "What about privet, I hear it makes a great hedge" I BEGGED her to reconsider! :)

Our native plant group is called Tennessee Wild Ones. The Chatanooga chapter has a plant swap/sale and several other events every year. I got persimmon, paw paw, hazelnut and several things from them.
Nice to see the Old Goat standing proud front and center.
Two of my favorites that I have and encourage here is beatiful Joe Pye weed and Cardinal flower.

So happy to see HOSS getting into native plants! I became interested in them this year as well. We purchased land this year and I want to designate a good portion to natives. I'm in Alabama.
