"As China releases key inflation and trade data and protests send a message to Beijing’s on the eve of the 20th Chinese Community Party Congress, this episode of Taiwan Talks takes a deep dive into the current health of China’s economy.

China’s extraordinary decades-long growth, which has dominated the rules of the world economy, has pulled millions of Chinese out of poverty. But has all that come screeching to a halt with plunging GDP growth of 2 percent this year, dropping below the rest of Asia for the first time since the 1990s? Has Xi Jinping really achieved his goal of a “moderately prosperous society in all respects”, or is this the beginning of a downturn for the Middle Kingdom?

We also explore the intricate industrial supply chains that bind the two sides of the Strait and ask whether tiny, democratic Taiwan has enabled the rise of its massive authoritarian neighbor.

Our studio guests Wang Jiann-chyuan, Chung-hua Institution of Economic Research (CIER) Vice President, and Roy Lee, Deputy Director of the Taiwan WTO Center also at CIER help us analyze how the growing tensions across the Strait will affect the economies of both the PRC and Taiwan, whether they can coexist and prosper, and what kind of future they will lead.

We also speak to Ho-fung Hung, Johns Hopkins University Policy Economy Professor, Chair of Sociology & Advanced International Studies, and Editor-in-Chief of ""Asian Perspective.""
