6 halves = 3 so 3 and a half = 7 halves = 7/2

3 1/2 apparently is a mixed fraction so we have to deal it like 3*2 +1= 7 and divide it by the denominator which is 2. that's how we get 7/2

what if you have 2/x how would you write that in index form

sorry but you write 3x1/2 and not 3+1/2, so you cannot replace 3x1/2 by 7/2!
