A model of Tectonic Spreading Centers, Transform Faults, and Subduction Zones

The model represents three major tectonic dynamics: spreading centers (middle of the model), subduction zones (at the far left and right edges), and transform faults (in the off-set area between the spreading centers). The East Pacific Rise and Middle American trench
along latitude 10 N is an example of such a system, with the Mariana or Yap Trench being the corresponding subduction zone.

This model is made of cardboard and cloth, powered by hand operated plastic gears.

Model and video by Jim Rosenbaum, assisted by Leah Rosenbaum and Andrea Zella Koort.
