I have watched many serve videos and I have purchased at least 4 different serve instruction videos on mastering the serve. I practice the serve religiously hitting baskets of balls 3-4 times a week and until I watched your video my serve is finally starting to look and feel better. I’m trying to copy your entire service motion from start to finish and for me I am getting positive results. It’s a work in progress ( leg drive, coiling) and I still have a long way to go especially with my topspin serve ; however, my flat serve has improved dramatically. My take back had been an issue and “waiter’s tray “ was constantly happening as I was trying to improve by following all the other tips and instruction videos. Your video here is the one that finally clicked for me after all this time. For a club player this is the service motion that works for me. Thanks Ryan

Ryan's videos are usually the ones that make a change in your game of tennis... simple, clear, efficient! Great stuff, congrats!

Great instruction, I especially like the slow motion / freezes so we can concentrate on how to get from one checkpoint to another.

Question: if this all works for serving into the ad court, what about the deuce court? In other words, at what point are we doing anything to aim? Is it in the setup, the turn, the throw motion, or something else?

This is great .. thanks. I have a question - at what point you decide the direction of the your hit/serve either towards the T or away....and what specifically do you have to do make that happen at both extremes?? Any clue will b useful. Thanks 🙏🏼

Hi Ryan: I love your serve videos... I have one question. When I watch Federer and other top players, they invariably have their trophy-pose position with the tip of their rackets pointing up to the sky before going to the left side of their body. My question is that is the birthday hat supposed to be pointing at an angle (i.e. my head is tilted thus my birthday hat would be tilted)? If I do the traditional salut, my racket tip would be facing to the side fence instead. Any further info would be appreciated

Thank you Coach Ryan for this, I still struggle with my Toss and I rarely pronate

Would you recommend doing a service motion with a weighted plastic bag? I see other instructions suggesting this. But when they swing the bag around, it doesn't knock the birthday hat off.

Great tips! Looks like you're tucking in the arm and racquet (in order to knock the birthday hat off) before uncoiling to hit the ball. But by getting the racquet pass over the head the way you do it helps force your racquet into that racquet drop position before you hit the ball. I will definitely try this. As a side note, this looks very different from the overhead. Why people say the overhead and serve are the same thing is beyond me. My overheads are great but my serves suck. Obviously they are different.

why do i struggle serving flatter to the ad court side with continentel grip, while i easily put the ball into the court with a eastern forehand grip.though i try to pronate but unable to target to the ad side of the court with this continental grip. hope you'll fix this, Regards.

I try to follow a lot of different Tennis advice online and I’ve got to say this clip about serving has really helped me personally. After trying the Novak version of bringing up the racket, and then “knocking off the birthday hat” ( not literally) along with a lower toss my serves are sweet, fast and very strong! I am totally amazed at how good a compact serve can be ! I still have the more traditional high toss J stance, and
Bounding into the court, like Alcaraz, but that’s a work in progress, and I can maybe hit one out of three whereas this particular style is very easy, and high percentage for me . Thanks man and keep up the great work! I’ve only been playing games for about 10 months and I definitely need some tips on how to Volley and play the net because I keep getting caught flat-footed and the ball dies on my racket :-(

If you have a link to some tips regarding Volley, please share it .

Thanks Ryan, I am trying to work this out from scratch in front of a mirror today, I'm an over 60 pancake server sadly. One question, what footwork pattern should you follow directly after the serve?

That's a wrap. You covered the serve in clear and complete detail. What is the reason that you teach the setup with the back foot only slightly back? VS back toes in line with the front heal or the super extreme Johnny Mac set up?
