Everything in this video occurs on a 1 day 30-mile kayak sail trip to North Bass Island and Back.

I’ve never sailed in my life but I’m about to own a hobie kayak and because I know it’s got sailing capabilities, this video appealed to me. I’m 7 mins in and intrigued with this. I also have a wilderness systems tarpon 120 kayak but I only want to eventually sail the hobie because it’s already to just put a proprietary sail on and learn. I’ve gotta watch videos like this to learn as much as possible. Thanks for your efforts.

I just bought a Jackson Journey myself! Sailing looks like a blast, looks like I’ll have to start budgeting for a rig. I do a lot of camping and backpacking videos on my channel, this would be a fantastic way to get me to beautiful campsites you can’t reach by foot! Look forward to learning the ins and outs of sailing here on your channel!

great video and nice sailing! I just received the sail kit for my Tarpon 140 kayak, and I'll be making a video this week to showcase your great product. I'm excited to get it installed and test it out :)

Just got my sail on my Feelfree 125 and sailing on the Susquehanna and Chesapeake. I love it! BTW I was a dock master during college in the 80’s on South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay). I spent the summer living on my Dad’s boat sailing in the evenings. Small World!

Looks pretty good indeed. Landing I noticed you threw your paddle forward which is a no no for me. I always hold on to my paddle. Im thinking of sailing a kayak after a very long time kayaking with too many trips under my belt. So yea i found your video very good thanks.

I have the same set up. Rather than having multiple sails it is very easy to set up reefing. One line, pretty much instant reef or deploy. 1m drop to .6m

I'm sold! Is a rudder mandatory, recommended? My Pygmy Boat Osprey tracks very straight, and don't want to add a rudder.

Pretty cool, love it... would it work on a sit on top pedal fishing kayak? (whitewolf spinner 130)

Have question about boom stop. So, it should be snug but not tightened down? The Allen wrench that comes with the kits (the one that used to be for the mast set screw) will fit the boom stop, but wasn’t sure about using it to tighten it - the video showed you could slide it up or down without the wrench.

Hi Patrick, great info, thank you..
I have a Design Kayaks Endless.
It is 5.2 M long, and only 50 cm wide.
What size sail would you recommend for such a kayak ?
Obviously, this is a fairly fast kayak already, so it probably won't need a lot of power to reach max hull speed.
I've tried a few different kayaks with sails, and I probably have around a couple hundred hours of sailing time, so Im reasonably experienced.

Hi Patrick. I’d love to do this with a sit on top kayak, but most of them are just too darn heavy for me to manage. Do you have a suggestion for a SOT that is lighter weight than the typical roto molded ones? Thanks!

What kind of kayak are you using and does the sail make it more likely to flip over

You don’t mention much about your rudder input ?
