What Will The New 'Game Of Thrones' Movie Actually Be About?

It has been reported that there is a "Game of Thrones" movie in early stages of development. I wanted to take a moment to think through what possible movies they could be thinking about. This is my first thoughts on some things that might make a solid movie and that HBO and Warner Bros might be thinking about at the moment.

Obviously we have no real idea but I think it is a fun topic to speculate about and who knows, maybe they haven't even decided yet on which option they want to go with.

What movie would you make first in George RR Martin's universe if it were up to you?

I just hope from the bottom of my heart that it's not Robert's rebellion, because I want Robert's rebellion to be a series of several seasons. There is way too much going on in that period to try shrink it into just a few hours. That would be a crime. So much interesting stuff would have to be let out.

The thing with movies, compared to a tv series, is that they need to cover a relatively short, self-contained story, simply because of the limited runtime. Sure, you could try and fit the entire story of Robert's Rebellion or the Long Night into a 2 hours movie, but I'm not sure you'd be able to do it justice. I mean, not even an 8 seasons show was able to do the books justice, so why would we expect a movie to do that with larger stories like these? So I believe that we should look for smaller scale stories, that still have highly recognizable elements and characters to draw people to the theaters. And when I think about these requirements, there's really only one thing that comes to mind: the Red Wedding. Or at least, the song that played during the Red Wedding and the story behind it. I could totally see a movie about young Tywin dealing with House Reyne's rebellion and ending with the massacre at Castamere that was later recorded into that famous song. It would fit comfortably in a 2 hours runtime, while still having strong ties to the original show.

Doom of Valyria could make a great Drama Movie with great Costumes, Family and political drama with dragons and spectacular visuals

I would personally like an anthology series focusing on the progenitors of all the noble houses. Tell me you would want to see Lan the Clever or Durran Godsgrief or Garth Greenhand.

I was worried when I heard the talks of Aegon's conquest as a show(it just wouldn't work as well) but a series of movies would be awesome. I'd love one for Roberts rebellion though, even if they keep some details vague.

I hope that it's about Robert's Rebellion. The end of the House of the Dragon after the series ends, which many expect to be Rhaenyra's death, would be a good idea. The Blackfire Rebellions might be a good idea. They keep jumping around with the timeline, though, which makes it harder to follow unless you have an enormous detailed family tree of the Targaryans and the other relevant characters for each timeline

I couldn’t care less. Hollywood is in shambles, and GRRM has broken faith with us so many times, I feel like we’re all being led astray at this point. It’s honestly heartbreaking

I think this is another bad idea. And I kinda blame George. Counting GoT, HoTD, AKotSK we will have three series based off uncompleted stories. In all this time George hasn’t finished anything to build a complete story from. So inevitably when show runners start to adapt from source material that dosnt exist and cut out the wrong things for logistics George will get upset that his story isn’t being faithfully told even though he can’t even finish one project.

It should be a trilogy detailing the doom of Valyria. Leverage some motifs from Dune

One family of dragon lords convinces the freehold that another family should send resources to colonize Sothoros which turns into a horror themed failed expedition, lovecraft style.

This family seeing their resources squandered and status diminished seeks vengeance as a more bold and aggressive head of the family moves the realm into an era of slit throats and assassins like Michael Corleone in the end of the godfather.

The sequel explores more of Valyria itself as it struggles with a near all out civil war of assassins and blood mages, the politics, the blood slaves, the horrors of the carnal pits, and the price of blood magic.

Lastly the ending reaches its apex, a lowly family of dragon lords who exhausted their resources in assassins & power grabs leaves for calmer lands in a seeming acknowledgment of their failure, only for them to have laid the grounds for the master stroke of the doom

I guess I'm just burned out on the real Neverending Story.

The first movie should be about Maegor and his ascension. Second about his reign. Third about the ascension of Jaehaerys. Fourth and fifth about his reign. It doesn't interfere with plans for anything else, it doesn't have to interfere with any canon from show or book, and there's literally all the material you need for incredible stories.

I think the problem with making a film to end a series is the pacing of the show and film would be different. El Camino wasn't bad, but it just felt like a long episode Breaking Bad that just followed one character. I think your Blackfyre rebellion take is good.

We need Winds. It’s an unfinished Story. A story without a point or a moral. Going back is an insult to fans and his own Legacy. If he couldn’t finish it he should have hired someone to co-write it with him. If he knows it will be a let down or inferior just do it and get it over with. But there is still so much potential for a great shocking ending… can’t believe he’s not excited for it anymore. Finish it or stop picking at it.
