녹턴(야상곡)은 원래 옛날 교회에서 밤의 기도서를 낭송하기 전에 행하는 기도의 노래(성가)였다.
그러므로, 녹턴은 고요한 밤의 정취를 노래한 서정시다.
피아노 곡 형식으로 처음 사용한 것은 아일랜드 작곡가 존 필드(John Field)이다.
