Its amazing the P-47, developed for air to air combat, was such a great ground support aircraft. One of the first models I ever got was a model kit from my grandmother that was a Thunderbolt.

I have to agree with you concerning the Mosquito and the P-47, both were great at multiple roles. I don't know what aircraft I would remove to add the Lockheed P-38 Lightening. It too was a multi role aircraft, shooting down more aircraft than other planes in WWII, and with its four 50 caliber machine guns and 20mm cannon it was as formidable a ground attach aircraft as the Mosquito and P-47. Of the three mentioned here I'm not sure which was the best ground attack aircraft but I would think it would be the Mosquito or the P-38. Having all the guns in the nose made it more accurate at a greater distance than the other two. Tough choice. Thanks for the video, good one!

Later variants of the Stuka actually eliminated the "Jericho trumpet" sirens. Turns out a built-in air raid siren is kinda counterproductive if you want to catch the other guy by surprise

I agree with the dude below. The mosquito and stuka's siren are the best because they scared the living shit out of enemy soldiers and civilians.

Great video Johnny.
Most WW2 aircraft historians discuss exotica like P51's, F4U's, Me262's etc. But combat pilots valued survivability above performance metrics so it's great that you put the P47 at the top of your list. In the same vein, let's hear more about F6 and B26 both of which had outstanding survival ratios.

honorable mention: Japanese kamakazi planes, it is VERY fast, agile, and maneuverable, It can hit *anything* at just a cheap cheap price of one zero and a human life.

A thunderbolt is built around its engine, just like A-10 is built around its gun. wait I'm seeing a pattern

When I was a boy (in the UK back in the 70's) used to read a comic called Battle, and one of the stories was about a British pilot who flew in a Russian squadron during WWII. The main plane he used to fly was a mosquito, painted red, with a large white skull painted on its nose. Fantastic visual! So for this reason, the mosquito has always been my favourite plane of WWII.

Interestingly post, I enjoyed watching this, many thanks. 👌

My personal fav is the Beaufighter…fought anywhere, reliable, rugged and packed a punch. It really did pave the way for the mosquito :)

Just thought I'd add some trivia I've came across regarding the P-47:

-Oscar Perdomo, the last US ace-in-a-day, and ultimately the last US fighter ace in World War II, scored all of his 5 kills in a P-47 whilst flying in a mission over Korea, which turned out to be his last mission, just 2 days before the surrender broadcast. 4 of those kills were against Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate (code name Frank), arguably the best Japanese fighter aircraft of the war. Thus showing that the P-47 was more than capable of holding down its own, at least in the Pacific.

-Brazil and Mexico, the only countries in the Americas to send their military personnel abroad during World War II, were both equipped with P-47s for their air force squadrons.

Arguably, the P-47 shone brightly as both a ground-attack aircraft and a fighter in the Pacific compared to Europe, where P-51s and Spitfires shone in one role, and the P-47 and the Typhoon in the other, with regards to single-engined aircrafts.

Great video as always Johnny.

Douglas A20 Havocs were one of the undersung performers at attacking on the deck as was the Bristol Beufighter. Much better vision out of the cockpit than it's successor the A26. A20s were another pioneer of parafrag missions on IJA Airfields and Skip bombing IJA transports. It had an internal bombay but didn't have the range of B25s and the gunner was trapped if you had to ditch it. But it was nimble on the deck like Mercury Morris of the '70s Miami Dolphins. Third Attack Group, 5th USAAF usually carried 6ea M2 .50 calibers in the nose unencumbered by prop gearing.. Aussie Beufighters had 4 ea 20mms.that were good at suppressing deck-mount AA fire in leading out combined service anti shipping missions in the Bismark Sea..
