I have never attended Naropa but live in the Boulder area and just wanted say that this video was very interesting and insightful! I appreciate you sharing and being open about your experience. I relate a lot to your background as a student. I also struggled in high school and similarly felt too intimidated at the time to go the traditional college route. A place like Naropa would probably have appealed to me a lot as a teenager. I will say though, don't be so hard on yourself. You're not dumb for going to a school that ended up being a poor choice. You are actually quite intelligent and perceptive with a lot of self awareness, as well as a clear motivation and desire to learn. As someone who is just now starting the process of returning to school as a 30 something adult (starting with community college courses ) I really have learned to value education and continually challenging myself academically and it sounds like you have a similar mindset.
Don't feel ashamed of your experience at Naropa or feel like you are a fool, or stupid for going there. You're not! There are soooo many students who make school decisions that they later realize were a mistake. Many colleges purposely prey on naive young people who are still figuring themselves out and don't yet have the life experience to recognize the red flags. Feel proud of yourself for being able to recognize when something isn't right and being able to reorient yourself in a different direction. That shows a lot of growth and maturity. Anyway, just wanted to share my thought as some random dude that stumbled onto this video. Sko Buffs!

I was applying for a position at Naropa, got to round 2 of interviews. Found your video and it was the final straw, and I pulled out of applying. No way I'm working at an institution like this.

Telling the truth is not "bad karma." Abusing students (or anybody else, for that matter) is bad karma or, as some would say, a sin. The roots of any group are telltale. I once knew a doctor who told me straight out that the founders of Naropa were into "sa."Not naming names here, but apparently, he'd met somebody who'd been abused by said founders. Whether it was a patient of his, I will never know now, as he passed away some years back. He was from the same area. He KNEW people. He knew things about the social milieu of his era there. And he HATED Naropa bc of this main factor. The "sa" there, he told me, had started with its first beginnings. YOU WERE WISE TO LEAVE.

Would you mind sharing what you were trying to study while at Naropa? And where did you end up moving to after leaving Naropa? I ask because Naropa seemed like a good fit, however listening to you and your story I would obviously never attend.
