Fernet Con Coca, or Fernandito is the national drink of Argentina. While Fernet has been hugely popular in Argentina since coming over from Italy with a huge wave of immigration in the first years of the turn of the 20th century, it remained a dinner after drink liker a typical aperitif is supposed to be had. That was until the 1970's when Fernet was first mixed with Coca Cola in Cordoba Province. Legend has it was discovered by drummer Oscar Becerra after he had soda water to mix his Fernet and instead used Coca Cola and a legend was born the Fernet Con Coca.

Fernet Con Coca remained a Cordoba drink until the 1990's when Branca (the owner of Fernet Branca) took notice and investigated. Discovering the local sensation behind it, Branca turned out a clever but huge advertising campaign celebrating the combination of Fernet and Coca Cola and turned it into a nationwide sensation and the new national drink of Argentina. Fun fact Argentina now consumes 3/4 of all Fernet Branca globally that is 75% which is incredible. In 2013 Argentina consumes 15 million gallons of Fernet-Branca.

Question for Argentina is why is the Fernet Con Coca the national drink despite having no links to Argentina? As I know Fernet-Branca is Italian and Coca Cola is American, there is no Argentine spirit or alcohol that is used. It is really fascinating.

70/30 VERSION:
- 30ml (1oz) Fernet Branca
- 75ml (2.5oz) Coca cola

50/50 VERSION:
- 60ml (2oz) Fernet Branca
- 60ml (2oz) Coca Cola

let me know what thoughts are on this popular South American drink?

Tried this today for the first time...did the 90/10 mixture. It's like drinking listerine with coke. The mint taste is SO strong not even coca cola can make palatable. Must be an acquired taste

The history of this drink is Italian immigrants brought it over from Italy. It was originally drank as a digestif. A shot to help you digest after a big meal. The coco cola didn't come until after. Not sure exactly when, but probably something that young people came up with to be able to drink grandpa's liquor hah. I love it, but it has to be the right percentage. I like 70/30 or 60/40.

I preferred the 70/30 Fernet Con Coca. A lot more refreshing I thought. A nice choice though. Well made and presented once again.

Mate, I've been getting into Korean spirits and soju is some strong stuff, tastes like paint thinner though. So-mek is a mixture or soju and beer and basically tolerable. The flavoured sojus are I imagine like alcopops for Koreans, they tend to be lower in alcohol too.
