john prine wud only change the 1 line, honouring John cash's own heart. john beleived in hope... the confident expectation of good, no matter what! i love and honour john cash, and his body of work. the same man broke the rules and sang kris's song, sunday mornin' comin down, when he sang that line, 'wishin' lord i was stoned'. i honour john prine in allowin the line change. nobody else wudda got that. i never cried when elvis dieed. SAD THOUGH I WAS. but in 2003, 12th september, i cried for JOHN CASH. FREINDS OF JOHN WILL IDENTIFY WITH ME HERE. THANK YOU.

There are different ways to interpret, "Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose." One can take it that Sam Stone rejected the value of the Lord's death. A lot of people do, you know.
