Did you know each sea otters need to eat around 25% of their body weight each day? That equals roughly 15–20 pounds of food daily! The sea otters at the Seattle Aquarium receive a diet of squid, mussels, capelin, herring, eulachon smelt, surf clams, clams in the shell (butter clams and cockles), shrimp and Dungeness crab.

In the wild, sea otters eat sea urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails and about 40 other marine species—but they usually specialize in two to four kinds of prey. Without sea otters, sea urchins would devour the kelp forests off the coast, which provide critical cover and food for many other marine animals.

Otters are the only marine animal that uses 'tools' such as rocks & carry them around with them in their underarm pouches - with the exception of the Coconut Octopus that lives in the Andaman Sea & carries 2 halves of coconut shells or husks, or large shells around with it when it's on the move, to hide & live in for protection. Animals are so incredibly fascinating - but Otters are so darned stinking cute! ❤❤❤
