It is feared more than 600 people have died after hurricane Helene battered through the US, officials have said.

Nationwide, more than 100 people have been confirmed dead, according to the BBC's US partner CBS, with officials warning that figure is expected to rise.

Helene slammed into Florida as a category four hurricane on Thursday, but was downgraded to a tropical storm.

Rescuers are focusing their efforts on Asheville, North Carolina - one of the worst affected areas.

The area affected is 2x the size of the entire UK, of course it is going to take time to reach hundreds of small towns with washed out roads. The sheer size of the area that is heavily impacted is hard to comprehend.

Amateur radio operators who are active in the region have set up a network to relay information to the outside world. In many communities, these operators have the only means to get help.

How very sad that so many people are suffering from this tragedy.

I hope the death toll doesn't reach 600 but it's going to get quite a bit worse. There are still lots of places that nobody can get to because of the destruction of roads and bridges. Some of these places weren't easy to get to BEFORE this disaster.

My prayers are with all whom have suffered Loss during this storm. Certainly a 1000 year event. Now just Imagine this happening in this area every 3 - 5 years. So, lets be grateful that it is only a 1000 year event in this area because this kind of shit happens in Puerto Rico "A US TERRETORY" approximately every 3 to 5 years. Food for thought.

When have you ever heard of a hurricane doing more damage 400 miles inland than it did on the coast....

Thank you for showing Marshall! Asheville and Boone
Are getting more attention because they are larger. But many people are trapped in Celo, Spruce Pine, Burnsville, Bakersville, Marion, Chimney Rock and they need help! No roads any more. No power, no water, no WiFi. Please donate to reputable organizations to help!

Hopefully people with money and power can help rebuild lives and homes instead of sending money to fund a war.

The more the planet warms, the more likely such episodes occur.
Devastating events in places where there were none a few years ago.
