(10-17-2013) This was definitely a surprise! Me and Gluse were exploring downtown Dallas and stumbled upon this amazing hotel. The manager was kind enough to let us see this amazing piece of history. It is self leveling too!

Nice! It was not aware that Otis had made any self levelling lifts from hand controllers!

I did get to drive an old Otis manual lift in San Francisco (since removed and replaced with a modern autotronic contraption!) however, I didn't know how many storeys that building was and I inadvertently had went beyond top floor and the safety limit switch apparently shorted out the main basement traction motor circuit and the circuit breaker had tripped!

As there was no interior gate or doors it was open cabin so i simply released (unlocked) the landing (exterior) doors and let myself out. There was only about a metre difference between cabin and floor landing so was safe to climb out. (For safety reasons I closed and locked the exterior doors before leaving to go to ground floor with their other adjacent newer automatic model).

As I was late for work at this retirement (senior) hotel as a waiter (my first day) I wound up being late and was subsequently made redundant. I was never brought to task as to why the circuit breaker had tripped on that nice old lift! I was sent up to my room as to fetch a tie for the job as waiter and had my chance at using their designated cargo lift.

despite the circuit breaker tripping, I did enjoy every second of my little adventure!

BTW whether this other one still exists I do not know, but in the kitchen area of the Grenada Hotel before I was made redundant, there is (or was) this other fine old manual lift as well. It was all frame and wire so total visibility was at hand, inclusive of hoistway. I did make a non-stop return trip on that lift (without blowing any circuit breakers)! That is also a basement traction powered lift as well.

The car you came up first in the beginning is a Montgomery.

Sadly, according to Texas elevator records both elevators here were modernized.

Interestingly, old records mention that this elevator was actually running on a modern controller even before modernization! That is probably why it has a self leveling feature. I am surprised they didn't remove the car switch and replace it with a car station, since the controller was likely capable of running an automatic elevator.

An awesome antique elevator like that which still runs, and they use it as a closet? At least you guys got to ride it!

Amazing old Otis. The only Otis elevator you'll find in my town is a GEN2. Not many older things here in Indy.

The self-leveling behavior is similar to the bromo seltzer tower elevator

I remember when all elevators were like this.  Now they just use them for junk service.  The modern ones do not interest me at all.

They need to make some geared elevators NOT service elevators so other people can enjoy pieces of history instead of riding boring MRL elevators that "modern" companies make and install.

What does self leveling mean exactly? That it levels up with the floor automatically?
