In this video, we'll take a deep dive into the new Parametric Modeling public beta released by Shapr3D. I'll take you through how to model an office desk with a filing cabinet on the side, and haripin legs, from beginning to end. I'll show you how to use the new tools and features available in this beta to create a fully updateable model.

*Thanks to Shapr3D for sponsoring this video! 😊

So I went through this video in detail and can honestly say it helped immensely to get me to a reasonably proficient level in Shapr. There are some issues that I would like to go over. While the interface is usable it still has a way to go before I would consider it refined. Here are some of the things that I noticed. 1. It does not appear that you can edit the plane function in the history. I suspect this may be true for a lot of the commands in history. Some just act weird when you go back and try to change things. 2. When you change the name of a sketch in the browser, it changes it in the history. When you change the name of a plane it does not change it in history. Seems to me that if a command results in an entity added to the browser that they should share the same name as it does with sketches. If a command in the history simply revises an entity in the browser (eg a chamfer to a body) then it probably would not need a name change since that revision could be on multiple edges. 4. Selecting an entity in the browser changes history to only show related items however selecting a body does not show the sketch that it is related to in the history. 5. Changing to new body in extrude in the dialog box in the history rather than using the icon on the body has unexpected results. 6. I personally think that renaming items in the history is just too much work. The focus should be renaming items in the browser and using folders for hierarchical storage similar to the assembly / component paradigm in Fusion 360. 7. The fusion convention of copy and paste or paste new does not seem to be implemented. In other words sometimes you want the new entity to be connected to the original entity and reflect all changes to any iterations. Sometimes you don't want them connected and as such you would use the "paste new" so that it is a new entity on its own. This is fundamental to parametric design and shows just how far Shapr is from being parametric. For example if you change the length of one of the drawer sides only that entity changes. It seems to me that since they were derived from the same extrusion and the same mirror that changes should cascade through. 8. This is related to 7. When you do a pattern command the bodies that it produces are not connected to each other like they are in Fusion. I honestly don't know if this is better or worse. For example in Fusion if you build a wall and put x number of studs 16" on center at 96" high and then you change the height in the sketch all the iterations change to the new height. Personally I don't like that. I think it is overkill. But Shapr version is underkill. This is where I think formulas enter into the equation. If I set a parameter of studheight= wallheight-(studthickness*2) then all the stud heights will change when I change that parameter and I don't need the software trying to outthink me. If I want to change one of the studs to a different height I go and change its formula to something else like DoorHeight. Anyways there are more issues but the other stuff is nit picky. On the positive side after going through this exercise of learning Shapr, I would not hesitate to recommend it for someone who is starting out. While it is intuitive the beta still has a lot of places where things just don't work as they should. At least twice I had to go back and watch exactly how you implemented something before I could get the command to work. It just didn't work intuitively. I love the interface and I love the direction they are going enough to make me conflicted about getting a Fusion360 subscription vs Shapr. I am a woodworker and for what I do this program checks almost all the boxes. But Fusion has so much more and for not much more. Very perplexed.

Great tutorial. Thank you for putting in so much time and energy to help everyone learn. I can listen and model at the same time, your descriptions are so clear and accurate!

Dude loving how the legs look.

Thanks for all the shapr3D tutorials!

Merry Christmas!

Awesome video, congrats !! On your previous video you explained in deep parametric design, but in this one, everything was much detailed. I will follow your design to get better practice in this new feature. Again, congratulations for your quite explicit video. Keep well. Happy festivities.

Yep bug is fixed lol
Thank you for doing these tutorials for someone who does not understand parametric modeling They are a huge help.

Thank you so much for the detailed video, it took the nerves about learning a new programme away. 👍

Love your work and the Shapr3d tutorials. When will your next one on parametric drop with the released version? Thanks for your hard work and knowledge sharing.

Thanks for all the Shap3r videos. I ended up purchasing for a year and I’ll test it out and see if I believe it is worth it. As a serious hobbyist it feels a tad too high since it can’t generate CAM for my ShopSabre CNC or Shaper Origin directly, but I hope I can find extra value, like the 2D drawing output, which I WILL absolutely use.

Hi, can you please share any sheet metal tutorial, about sheet metal cabinets parts, assembly flat pattern, DXF, drafting, etc

Great video, thank you! Question - when you do your constraint checks....move the overall height, adjust a dimension, etc... How do you approach fixing a model that is not working with those checks? I'm halfway through this video, and when I raise the overall height, only the desktop is moving. I'm also having a problem when changing the cabinet dimensions. Just curious how you would approach finding the problem to fix it. Thanks in advance.

A comparison video between Fusion 360 and Shapr3d would be interesting. Do you have a preference?

I know this video is a few months old but im super curious to know how long did it really take you to design this table from start to finish.

Somehow i can't make the construction plane follow the snapped point to move. Did i do something wrong?

I’ve been trying to follow you on this but a lot of times when I go to the history side I somehow end up deleting things and I can’t even get it back. It’s super annoying cause I’m definitely not hitting delete.

Let me first say that I think your videos are great and your reaction to your initial version of the reindeer on that video was so funny especially because I was thinking the same thing. I am a Fusion user who has started to consider the benefits of Shapr3d. It seems now however with the addition of history based parametric design it is now starting to look like Fusion with a bit cleaner interface. I know they are planning to add formula expressions which will complete the same parametric functionality already in Fusion but honestly it still feels like a partly broken under implemented version of fusion. In your last video you exported to Fusion for the CAM features. Those features are only available in the paid version. So it appears you have not gotten rid of your Fusion subscription as of yet. I get it you like to use your Ipad and your Pen but my Ipad hardly gets touched. I far prefer my computer with its big screen. Fusion is now offering a 3 year locked in deal that only requires an annual commitment for $38 / month. That is only $13 more a month than Shapr3d with, in my opinion at least, a lot more functionality. The downside being that it has a bit more of a confusing interface. Can you convince me that I am wrong?

Does anybody know If you can Nest in Shaper 3D ?
Like drawing a cabinet, then nesting the parts for CNC break out ?

Looks interesting. Is there an option to buy and own this software outright instead of renting it every month? Had to abandon Photoshop after using it professionally for more than 2 decades and Maya as a hobby. I just can’t take this “own nothing and be happy” bullcrap anymore.

I guess they changed something’s again. I don’t have the option to extend to a point in the extrude menu in history tree. Only have option to extend to object or distance. This is very frustrating. I am spending hours on you tube and in forums trying to learn this but things do not work on my end like they do in the videos so I have waisted time with nothing accomplished.
