I have a set of Crankbrothers Mallet E pedals on my MTB. They have a dual sided clip in option and have flat(ish) options both sides too. I can see advantages of those Versas with a dedicated side for each

I use a Kean SPD sandal for most touring for their comfort, ventilation, toe guard and some comfort in walking off bike though clips are slippery on rock. I find somewhat uncomfortable to use them on the non spd side of the pedal and in spite of those bolts my foot slips off them which results in shin scrapes on the pedals.
I have another spd cycling shoe which is not quite as comfortable as sandals is better walking off the bike but it too slips on non spd side of pedal. I don’t want longer bolts as they would cause even deeper gouges on shins.
Are their others experiencing these problems?

Does anyone wear the 5-10 Hellcats while riding, clipping in for climbs and using the flats for descending? I’m curious to know how these type of shoes perform on the flat side of pedals with a recessed clip.

What kind of shoe would you recommend to use for these pedals? On DMR's website they suggested a "flat sole style clipless shoe" which I'm assuming is stiff on the cleat channel but flexible enough on the other areas. They have a picture as an example but no actual shoe brand or name. I have a Giro Gauge shoe which from the outside looks like a running shoe but believe me the bottom sole is very stiff. It would work well using the clipped side of the pedal but I cannot flex my feet to do a 'monkey feet grip' like you would on flat pedals. I could with a normal running or skate shoe. That is why I'm trying to find a truly hybrid mtb shoe for a hybrid pedal

I've got these pedal, only 50km so far and feel something while peddling. Checked and there is a slight play in both pedals. Is that normal?
