Holy Name of Jesus: Brightness of Eternal Light

St. Thomas Aquinas teaches us this important principle: “what is first in any order is the cause of everything which follows it.” One of the reasons for the power of the Holy Name of Jesus is that it is the first name… as St. Paul was inspired to write to the Colossians: “He is… the firstborn of every creature… that in all things he may hold the primacy” (Col 1:15,18). As we heard in the Introit, every place, every level of creation and every creature will bow down to this Name. Note how the Gospel indicates that name pre-existed His Majesty’s conception: “His Name was called Jesus, which was called by the Angel before He was conceived in the womb.” Jesus means Savior… thus, St. Irenaeus (d. 202): “Since the Savior already existed [in the Divine INTENTION], God had to create something to be saved, unless the Savior were to exist without any purpose.” He had a name before ALL names. Both the angels (created on the 1st Day) and men (created on the 6th Day) needed a Savior! He was before them! His name is Primordial!! The Beginning!! The Brightness of Eternal Light as we say in the Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus.
