Para 1989 debutó con su primer disco homónimo titulado Martika. Rápidante su estilo y carisma musical captaron la atención de la industria musical; la canción Toy Soldiers (que también grabó en español, con el título "Como un Juguete"), alcanzó la posición #1 del Billboard, y temas como More Than you Know, I Fell The Earth Move (Yo siento la tierra moverse), cover del tema original interpretado por Carol King, y Water acogieron gran notoriedad a nivel mundial, que rápidamente la hicieron merecedora de una nominación al premio Grammy.
