How HOLD a guitar pick WITHOUT it slipping

In this guitar lesson for beginners, I’m going to go over a very important topic which is how to hold a guitar pick. But not only how to hold a guitar pick, I give some suggestions as what to do if you find that your guitar pick is slipping out of our hand and falling to the floor.

This is something that is very common for beginner guitar players. They start getting into more intricate strumming and the pick flies out of their hand and onto the floor. I’m going to show you a couple ways to hold your guitar pick for strumming the guitar to adjust for this and I’m also going to make a suggestion a different type of pick that might help you with holding on to your pick a little bit better.

is the breath of fresh air that I really needed. I never even thought of the 2 finger pick grip before & I will definitely give that a try. Thank You Lauren for posting this, which is something that I really need to know!

I was reading an interview with James Hetfield and he uses the two finger grip extensively. If he uses it and you use it, there's no shame in it :)
Thanks, Lauren. I love your teaching style and your taste in cars and electric guitars 👍 kudos from a transplanted New Englander!

For those of us occasionally doing woodworking, you can take a small piece of sticky back fine sandpaper and put that on the meat of the pick. The new Dunlop Ultex picks seem less "slippery".

You always hit on all the little things I have trouble with. That’s why I like your videos. I’m always having to adjust my pick in my figures.

I am glad you mentioned the Dunlop Maxi grip.l love this pick and use it most of the time. Great grip.l avoid using the smooth picks as they slide around too much in my fingers. The other one I like is a German made pick Herdim, which has a triangle shape and three different gauge corners.

Lauren, you have a great way to explain things. This is a clarifying way of explaining how to hold a pick. I have a request for a tutorial. I have just happened to get an electric guitar (Ibanez) and an amp. I don’t know much about starting out to set the guitar controls and the amplifier(Fishman). I think you are one that makes things clear for us no nothings. Could you have a tutorial on thin?

I use a small amount of 'Simply Tacky' and stick the pick to my index finger. Don't use Dap BlueStik as it sticks too well. With ST the pick will stay stuck to your finger even if you take your thumb off of it, so you can thumb pick instead of hybrid picking if you want. You'll never have to worry about the pick shifting position again. I am amazed that nobody to my knowledge has ever posted this idea before.

Thanks for the awesome tips. funny I found this video as I was just complaining to my my wife that I can't keep the damn guitar pick in my hand. I was strumming your down down up down up pattern to stand by me lwhen my pick flew out of my fingers and landed in the hole and my guitar took me 10 minutes to get the damn thing out.
