Even though Shikamaru was lazy, and barely dud anything, he still stood out to Temari. This was not because of his jutsu, or anything to do with power, but instead his intelligence. During the exam when they fought, he totally blind sided her with his elaborate scheming, and had her beat with no way out.

I think Temari is the only woman who can handle a lazy genius like Shikamaru. Their romance was foreshadowed very early on. In volume 26, or close to it, Shikaku tells Shikamaru that he loves his wife because sometimes she gives him a gentle smile. Not long after, Temari saves Shikamaru’s life and gives him a big, happy smile. I think it was volume 25 or 26.
