I am a 3D artist for more than 10 years mostly working for games. I can assure you that RMT(real money trading) within the game is illegal, what only exist within RMT is when the publisher/developer also get the profit for example like Second Life, IMVU etc where you can sell IP item in exchange of in game currency. But still you need to buy the game curency with real money.

SO yes this is Ponzi but I suspect that the game can also get money from ads. In short this is the scheme where the game make the players as their slave money maker. Even if this works just wait for the bubble to be burst.
