The title translates as “A Man of Experience and Wisdom”
“Yekermo Sew” an instrumental by Mulatu Astatke that was a reworking of Horace Silver's “Song For My Father”(1964). By using an Ethiopian scale instead of its Western counterpart, as well as contemporizing the instrumentation (using electric instruments such as electric guitar and Wurlitzer electronic piano) to create his own sonic signature, Astatke transformed a jazz standard into a distinctively Ethio-Jazz composition. The melody is hypnotic and dramatic though. Played as a pentatonic scale, the Arabesque nature of much Ethiopian music is evident.
The original “Yekermo Sew” different cut of this version released: 1969 (Vinyl, 7", 45 RPM) Single “Teshome Meteku / Mulatu Astatke ‎– Mote Adeladayou / Yekermo Saw” Amha Records
This version first appears on the "Ethiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits" LP in June, 1972 (Amha Records) & that was reissued on:
Ethio jazz & Musique Instrumentale. 1969- 1974. Éthiopiques, Vol. 4. (Buda Musique) 1998
Mulatu Astatke ‎– New York - Addis - London - The Story Of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975 (Strut Records) 2009
