This place is the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos, a self-governing state within Greece. It’s the spiritual centre of Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

Women have been banned from Mount Athos for a 1000 years. Athos is the only state in the world with an all male population.

They cant pay taxes since one of the three rules of becoming an orthodox monk is poverty, they own nothing. If a pilgrim brings a pair of socks, for example, they are gratefull. The limited amount of people who get permissin to stay on mount Athos are not tourists, but pilgrims. The number of non orthodox tourists that get the pass to visit Athos is very limited. The accommodation and food is provided for free to every visitor by the monasteries as hospitality. Some pilgrims leave some kind of payment, whatever they wish, to the monastery for their hospitality, but not everyone.

Fascinating but as a Christian I think should pay taxes to the Greek government too from the amount of tourism they bring in.

As a Greek person : reclaim mount Athos from the church, make it a museum so all people regardless of gender, sex, religion etc can visit and get rid of the priests.
