READ HERE
After this guide was made, there have been several changes found by the community about how slugpups actually work, these are some things which got proven wrong after the video released:
- There is no memory or learning the slugpups can do. You cannot change their competence in any way, no matter how hard you try. That means that a slugpup will be as effective if it sat on your back for 20 hours as it was before
- The entire personality and fav foods thing works WAY, WAY differently and far more complicated than i made it seem
- Not totally confirmed, but the whole "play with me" mode may be a myth

A simple guide on how to unlock, find and live with slugpups in Rain World Downpour

I have a dark green slugpup I named Bean, and I grew super attached to him. Because of him, I end up killing every single enemy in an area just to make sure he doesn't get harmed, and I think the personality plus watching me slaughter everything every single time has caused Bean to become an absolute MONSTER to predators, because eventually, he started joining in on fights and we once killed an entire horde of orange lizards together. Then, everytime I got nabbed by a lizard, Bean would go into actual KILL mode because he WENT for a purple lizard that nabbed me and singlehandedly stabbed it to death with a spear. My absolute champion, I'm so proud of him.

i have two little shitheads that ive named Sock and Seaweed. Sock is a energetic little black slugpup who loves his pearl, and Seaweed is a dark green slugpup who likes to watch the light leave creatures eyes. Their hobbys include weighing me down, getting me killed, falling though the floor, playing with pearls, and dying. I would kill and die for them both

Something of note: Slugpups are so light that they can ride neuron flies like a jet pack. This gave me a HEART ATTACK because my pup would be flying everywhere and I had to float aimlessly towards them Xdd

I had a slugpup who's fav food were pupa fruit.
So i was at the wall and i fed him one
He started jumping and then he literally fell off the side of the wall and *died*

Recently finished a Spearmaster campaign taking care of a slugpup I named Nightcat. Nightcat was a damn monster in spite of me doting on them and carrying them everywhere; they would actively jump in and chase down and stab any predators that grabbed me. At one point during an altercation with 2 king vultures and a blue lizard, Nightcat saved me from said blue lizard but then got grabbed by a zonkerdoodle. I saw the food bar go grey and thought they were done for, fully prepared to go kill the lizard in revenge before tossing myself into the abyss to restart the cycle when I exited a pipe and saw them just casually walking towards me, with a lone scav nearby and zonkerdoodle nowhere in sight. I have no idea what happened, but I can only assume that whatever gods the scavs worship gave that one a vision and told it that a badass such as Nightcat is not to die such a simple death.

Something to note: As you said, they will try to mimic you, but they also might grow dependent on you. If you carry one on your back all the time (holding on to one has the same effect, though much smaller), the pups will grow dependent on you and will become super incompetent

During my Rivulet expedition i encounter a slugpup (with slugpups for everyone mod) who literally was a mini version of Gourmand. He were chonky, pale yellow pup with zero energy (and will to move). Little guy tend to take a nap every time i put him on the ground, and not only that, he were afraid to pick a fight with lizard, which resulted in restarting cycle each time i was snagged lol. But because of that, we successfully ended our expedition in shelter just outside of Moon's chamber. Somehow all pups i ever encounter share this lazy personality, lmao. But that one pup were special.

I love when I'm playing a combat heavy slugcat like Hunter, and after a while of having a slugpup, we'll start a cycle and the pup will immediately pick up a spear with me and follow me out.

They know the drill.

if i find a pup as hunter and i'm not doing unlimited cycle i like to add on the objective of "deliver the pup to moon's slugpup daycare"
the pup will not actually be taken care of by moon and will instantly despawn the moment you leave it for a cycle but i like to imagine it grows up in the relative safety of moon's collapsed can

also, you can actually carry a backspear and a slugpup simultaneously:
1. have a slugpup and a spear in both your hands
2. jump onto a vertical pole
3. while moving up the pole, hold grab
this attaches both slugpup and spear to your back!
i don't know if this is an exploit that'll get patched or an intended feature? but it's really nice to have

one very cool thing about them is that they can learn movement techs from you, my mint pup have learned how to use turn boost and do backflips

I found a pup as early as industrial on a survivor run. I initially gave it the back treatment but eventually let it walk freely more and it became quite the warrior over time. I found another one in subterranean and moving around became much harder but after many trials and tribulations I managed to bring my new family safely to outer expanse.
something I learned the hard way is that slugpups aren't wary of worm grass at all. I let both of my pups go in a room with a lot of food and no mobile predators and before I knew it one of them fell victim to worm grass.

An important thing I've learned: Having a leech attached to them will make the pup fall off your back, and you won't be able to put them in your back again until the leech falls off. You can still grab them by the hand and pull them out of the water that way.
When crossing a body of water with 2 pups, sometimes it's better to take them across one at a time for this reason, holding their hand.

I am currently doing a survivor playthrough, and I initially only intended to take care of 1 slugpup. For a long list of reasons I decided to obtain a slugpup using the beastmaster mod. I spawned the slugpup and I tamed it, but it had an ugly color, and I intended to replace it with one with a prettier color. I spawned a bunch of slugpups until I found one with an incredibly pretty shade of pink and I slept with that slugpup and the original slugpup I had spawned. Now I had a little issue, I didnt have the heart to kill the first one, but I also didnt want to play through the whole game with only one hand. So now I am father of two xD

A small side note is also that some slugpups are afraid of certain special creatures depending on personality.
My Slugpup Nettle I have o my survivor run is very independand, very brave and has a low empathy towards preds that hunt me. Found him in outskirts literally killing a green by himself.
However hes completely scared shitless of monster kelp and will run 3 rooms away from the creature with me barely beeing able telling him to stay in place.

also, lots of good parents here, even if your kid is a little incompetent mistake, at the end of the day, what matters is that you love your kids, and your kids love you.

this vid should be renamed to "how to be a good parent with videogames"

Also, i wish for this game to be updated so if you start taking care of a slugpup, after a certain amount of cycles they can grow up from a pup to juvenile(taller than a pup, more agile but heavier, however, much more capable), then to an adult slugcat(pretty much like the player), this allowing you to raise your family of adopted slugcats

i would take to become an adult slugcat it would take a lot of education and around 200 cycles

Great video! I just finished a modded Spearmaster campaign with a slugpup, and they looked almost exactly like your pup Henry. Haha!
I could've sworn I saw this in my game, but I'm not sure if it's a trait only certain slugpup personalities have or if this was added by the mods I have installed because I haven't seen anyone bring it up before. During and shortly after the player slugcat has run away from a predator and is carrying the pup on their back, you can see the pup shaking- which I presume is shaking in fear. I thought it was a little sad that the pup was so scared, but it's also cute and it adds a lot of life to them.

Had a survivor run as artificer and camped for a pup in outskirts and intended to get strictly only one

Instead, one entered my shelter as it was closing in industrial and another I saved from drowning because it was raining the entire cycle and parts of the map were flooded
So now I had 3 little balls of chaos and I had to try to take them all to outer expanse because I didn’t have the heart to abandon them. One can only imagine how many times I restarted the cycle

i tried to do a little challenge a while ago where i had 4 slugpups which i named war, death, famine and pestilence.
famine and pestilence died almost immediatley
death was very quiet and reserved and doesnt do much
war was an incredibly fearless and energetic slugpup with little regard for his life as he has walked straight into several lizards and survived somehow, he also has seperation anxiety
