The crazy thing is that here in the US people stare at you if you're wearing a mask.

If someone stares at you, stare back at them harder.

In Australia if you stare at someone they usually reply with "Wotdafuckyoulookinatcunt!!" Followed by a barrage of physical threats.

as a westerner, i wish it was commonplace to wear masks when sick. it may seem annoying but it really does help keep even small outbreaks from spreading very much.

That was an aspect of Japan I liked. If your sick or want to avoid getting sick and know your in a crowded situation that could result in getting sick, why not wear a mask. I hate when I'm just starting a holiday and during the flight I catch a cold or flu... its happened to often.

Everything I’ve heard about Japanese culture is mainly about a fear of being different from the norm, from becoming a social outcast of sorts.

In Japan there's no rule and they do it.
In the U.S. there's a rule and we don't do it.

A few years ago (way before the pandemic), I made the mistake of wearing a medical mask while I was in Los Angeles and got stopped by police every single day I was outside the hotel. They just kept assuming I was up to something shady.

Interesting. My family from Australia were very impressed that people in Japan were wearing masks and felt that it meant people were more caring about others.

As a German I envy that people in Japan are considerate enough of the people around them to wear masks if they aren't well and have to go into a crowded public space.

as an american, I wish more people were as polite and thoughtful as the Japanese were, when it comes to personal space and not wanting to make other sick.

It's refreshing to hear the real opinions of japanese individuals rather than just hearing about their social prejudices

For those that don't know, face masks have been common in Asia before covid19

As a foreigner, the courtesy of wearing an mask and not passing around germs is a Japanese norm that I actually admire.

Well, I envy the Japanese living in a society where people consider it their job to take care of their community, value the lives of others and don't consider it their "personal right" to endanger their neighbors.

Here in the Philippines, staring is an outright rule of challenging someone. So a lot of people may look, but they don't stare.
