Elon wanted to build X's independent Media features around Matt Taibbi but Matt refused to leave substack and Post all of his stuff exclusively on X. Which screwed up Elon's plans. Essentially, Matt and Elon were aligned on government censorship issue, but Matt realize that Elon was grooming him to be a lackey so he bounced because he wants to maintain his integrity and Independence. Pretty sure that pissed Elon off.

That being said, if Elon really cared about having spaces where more or less independent journalists can still speak their minds uncensored, he'd have to support Substack!

Nobody is ignoring that Matt is being punished by Elon. Everybody is talking about it, and laughing (quite rightfully) at the way Taibbi humiliated himself carrying Elon the scorpion on his back just to get stung.

Everyone focusing on Matt telling Elon he refused to criticize him seems to be missing some very important context about that period.

This was during a time when certain media outlets were trying to find ways to attack Elon via anyone close to him. They even went after his family. There was a new story about Elon every day, which seemed to be a way to shift focus away from the Twitter Files. At some point, they tried to use Matt to accomplish this goal of attacking Elon and he didn’t do it. If he buried a story to protect Elon, I’d feel differently, but deciding to not allow the media to use him as a tool was a good thing, even if the optics (in hindsight) aren’t good.
