Vintage Fein Assd 715-1 42V Screwdriver Part 1: Teardown

In part 1 of this restoration, we teardown both the 42V transformer and this unique screwdriver torque-limiting low-voltage screwdriver. These are probably both from the 1970s.

I hope it goes back together as easy as it came apart. Great video.

The socket and the plug are standard parts according to IEC 60309 for extra low voltages in this case, the white color is part of the coding and is telling us that it's voltage is 40...50 V.

It's called CEE-plug /-socket here, and there are different colors and sizes available. Single phase, three phase, low voltage. The other standards are blue (230 V), red (400 V) or yellow (120 V) for example.

The blue sign is from the plant were it was used. It's the electrical test that must be repeated every year in every business here in Germany (and in Europe). It's an insurance thing. Even in offices the computers must be tested that way, but they should be tested every 4 years because they are not moved often. In workshops or construction sites there's a higher chance of getting cables damaged. The testing is according to DGUV A3 (former BGV A3). The test is the same as the VDE 701-702 testing. It's containing an optical inspection, insulation testing, leakage current, impedance of the ground connection. Depending of the appliance class.

The drop-in-triangle-symbol is IP X4.

Ferrules are mandatory in Germany since the 1970s if you're using fine stranded wires in screw type terminals. It's banned to tin them and put them into such terminals. Reason is, the solder is deforming, the screw is staying on it's place and then the wire will fall out of the terminal.

The "white stuff" on the nuts/skews is zinc oxide. If zinc is long enough in a hot and dry environment it will oxidize to such powder.
The 42V AC is considered not lethal. Because of employee safety many of the factory tools are 42V. In addition the risk of arcs are heavily reduced so it can be used in explosion-prone environment if the tool is specially shielded. Many of the cole mining equipment in the coalbed was 42V or pneumatic.

I'm not sure, but i think the tip is an adapter for different tooltips like grinders and such. But i didn't recognize it.

The mechanical parts are similar to impact wrench. The hammer rotates and jumps over the ridges against the force of the spring.

I giggled at the "i'm not sure i have a screwdriver long enough" statement. It would have been so funny if it turned out to be true. :)

The white stuff is probably anti sieze paste if the fasteners are stainless steel. Stainless has a tendency to cold weld itself together.

The bals outlet is similar to standard industrial outlets for 230/400V made by bals and other manufactorers.

Hi, I need a set of good quality Hex L-keys.
I am going to use them in a marine environment, and my actual set is slowly rusting away.
Do you have any favourite?

What was the point of taking it apart that much?

The transformer is probably made by "ISMET".

Its not pronounced 'Fine' its 'Fayn'. I used to work for a distributor handling Fein products here in the UK and this was always how the Fein rep pronounced it.

CEE are european and usually used for high current/amperage like 32Amps 3phase AC for example.
Try amazon.de "CEE Steckdose" to see some ;)
