All these comments make me thankful the Mate desktop exists and I don't have to deal with any of this.
Desktop icons-check
Tasks on the taskbar-check
adjustable (in pixels) size taskbar-check

I like the fact that it asks you which style you want to use. I do not like when an OS, or any software, forces a change in the way you use it, for no reason other than design. A grievous example of this is Gnome disabling desktop icons by default. People have been putting icons on their desktop for over 30 years, why did they make the unilateral decision to stop that? Yes, it can be enabled. However, no one should have to do that. There is no reason to disable them.

I personally love the more modern layout myself. I really appreciate that the team has taken the time to make that feature. I absolutely don't want to see them go overboard with it like adding a dock or something with full screen app views. I like that Cinnamon isn't like GNOME 3.

Plus the more modern layout should be much more appealing to Windows 7-10 users. We haven't had that old Mint look with Windows by default since Windows Vista. So that design is basically 10-11 years old.

I have nothing against people liking the old layout, but for the majority of users I think this is a positive change.

I don't know what problem people have with 19, but I am in love with Mint 19. I started with 19 Beta, and kept it to release. Though I was starting with no real expectations. Wanted to start fresh with a modern LTS, so I take the troubles as they come, but overall has been few problems, certainly no problems with hardware on my 4790k+980ti.

I agree with having a layout setting outside of mint welcome screen. That said as someone who always installs Icing Task Manager it makes me extremely happy that the cinnamon team have forked it and included it cinnamon as an official applet. It might bother me if they had gotten rid of the traditional layout but as it stands right now I do not think they have lost their minds for trying to offer the option for both a modern and traditional desktop layout.

I HATE HATE that old task list. Too much of Windows XP look. I am so HAPPY for this new change. I always remove that task list and install the Icing Task Manager. To me, it flows so much better. The words just jumble together and takes up way too much space. I prefer looking at the icon or hovering over an icon with my mouse and seeing a small window pop-up that I can select. Why do you not see the light in this?!! Arrrrghh. lol. Good video, Tom. Thanks for the review, I always enjoy your videos.

Mint Linux is mine as well. Go mate!!! But we agree for sure on the 18.04 base and this doesn't seem to be an upgrade. I think we're really on the same page here. I tend to keep my themes dark with Microsoft fonts. Don't care for Windows, their fonts are ok.. lol

UPDATE: I looked in the source code, and YES, I was completely correct about it being a lot like how Feren OS did it in 2015-2017 - it IS one fast burst of DCONF changes one after another with NO sleep periods between DCONF changes whatsoever.
7:18 That seems oddly like how Themer does theme changing on Feren OS... My only worry to them is that I haven't fully checked yet but it seems like they do all the gsettings changes in one burst, which is what I used to do in Feren OS, until I found out that users were having problems with Cinnamon either failing to reload afterwards due to a crash on reloading, or Cinnamon never loading on its new Cinnamon instance and remaining frozen indefinitely...

Hey, Mint Team, if you're seeing this, consider sleeping between gsettings changes if you haven't already, it'll make the desktop more likely to reload fine upon a Cinnamon Restart when it has chances to adjust to every single gsettings change one by one.

on my Linux Mint i have the "Windows XP" theme and "Windows 8" icons and mouse, then on my Windows 7 i have the "Zorin OS" 12 Background and the PC holding both those OS has a MAC sticker on it! it's a "Windows MAC Mint"!

Ubuntu 18.04 has caused other problems in Linux MInt 19, for example ntfs file systems are no longer visible in the file manager because 18.04 reworked samba connectivity. Seems to have broken the first law: "Don't break user space".

Mint 19 works just fine... no point in upgrading a version... besides... the panel is not really intuitive...

In my workflow I’m more of an icon person rather than task list type of person. I don’t use Linux Mint I use Elementary OS call me crazy but it works for me. But I suggest all my friends and family who love Windows layout to use Linux Mint. One of the things that drives me nuts is categorized menus by related programs I wish Linux Mint would have an option to rid of that and manually configure the menu to be organized by order rather than category.

Does anyone know how to increase the Text-shadow on the text under the desktop icons? The lack of text-shadows are really straining on my eyes unless i have a really dark wallpaper. I know XFCE has pretty good shadows but i wanna use Mint since i love it in every other way!

So, really the only thing of importance is the theme? Icons & Fonts? How things look?

Nothing much matters beyond the aesthetic in the new age, eh?

How do you have all the background images that you have? I installed Mint 19 and I only have Linux Mint and Tara.

Whenever Mint 20 LTS comes along will I be able to upgrade from 19 LTS strait to 20 LTS, or will I need to go 19.1 and so on?
