Knowing my limits isn't something I've ever been particularly proficient in. So when I had the opportunity to learn to SNOWBOARD (!) as an amputee this past weekend, I was faced with a difficult choice - one of failure and success all in one moment. 😉

MY STORY //

Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

MY PROSTHETIC LEG:
I use the Ossur ProFlex XC Torsion foot/ankle with a direct socket with passive vaccum suction.

The jokes about how you still haven't found your foot after like 2 years of looking for it are and will always be funny to me.

You joking about your foot missing and that it might be found somewhere actually caused me to have dreams about randomly meeting lone feet in the supermarket, at the bus station, in my bearded dragon enclosure and so on. The feet were very friendly, though. Dreams like those aren't unusual for me, I've dreamed more bizarre things than that. But I feel like you might find those dreams funny.

Also, little Snowboard tip: when you're tired, you can just sit on your Snowboard and use it as a sleigh, which is easier and faster than walking and also a lot of fun. I've been doing that when I started snowboarding.

On where you feel the pressure when snowboarding, it changes the more you practice. As someone with two meat feet, when I started I felt a lot of pressure on my toes/front foot. After the "I'm constantly falling and have no clue what I'm doing" - phase, obviously. By now, after a few years of practice and becoming actually pretty good, I do a lot of braking and changing directions just by shifting my weight, and I feel it almost exclusively in my knees, unless I have to stop rapidly.

I'm really proud of you for knowing your limit. I've been following your channels from almost the beginning (gosh that makes me sound like a stalker, I'm sorry) and it's so amazing to see how far you've already come. Love you!

I doubt your foot has made its way to England but I will keep an eye out 💜

My husband and I spent a portion of our honeymoon in steamboat. It was really nice and has some really great food!
You should do a skiing/snowboarding colab with Molly.

Ps. Makeup is On Point! Looks really good!

I tried ice skating for the first time since my amp. And I was so surprised how I picked it up. Definitely recommend giving ice skating a go. Love the videos :)

This is really what I needed to hear right now. I'm struggling with high functioning anxiety and a lot of stress, but it is so good to just hear I'm allowed to stop worrying about procrastinanting my work. I'm allowed to just close the document and look at it again tomorrow. Thank you for reminding me Jo, you really made my evening better today.

Hey Jo, I've been a snowboard instructor for over 10 years now and I've taught adaptive snow sports for like 5 or them. The fact that you were willing to go up the chair is amazing! A lot of beginners tend to shy away from that on their first day.

Also, anyone who's really passionate about riding doesn't even think twice when someone decides to walk down the hill. We're just glad to see someone out there trying a new sport! Especially lady shredders! 🤙 Snowboarding is hard to learn and we've all been there.

Just know that we're super proud of you and will always support you!

"People might look at me and judge me."
This is very true, but if you will continue reading, I'd like to share a story from my own life.
About a year before my leg was amputated my father had surgery to harvest a bit of hip bone for transplant into my leg.
This would have been in January of 1972. My sister was born in February of 1972, so Mom was HEAVELY pregnant at this time.
So, here is my father sitting in a wheelchair with 2-year-old me in his lap and my very pregnant mother pushing him along.
People were giving my dad some really dirty looks, obviously judging him, a fit looking young man being pushed around in a wheel chair by his extremely pregnant wife.
Yes, people were judging my dad, probably extremely harshly, but also very unfairly because they didn't know the rest of the story.
Don't let unfair judgment get to you. In the long run, it won't even matter.

I don't comment on videos a lot but I just wanted to let you know this advice was exactly what I needed today. I'm going in for osteomyelitis surgery tomorrow and I'll be out of work/ off my feet for a few months. I very much have that mentality to "push through" and it was stressing me out to take so much down time to heal, so thanks for delivering such a great message with such positivity :)

Knowing your limits is so important! (and so difficult😉). Good for you for listening to your body 👍.

So proud of you for two reasons. First, you attempted to do something out of your comfort zone and proved you could do it. And second, you listened to you body and quit in one piece vs. in a ski patrol sled. From a person who has been skiing 30 plus years, I too still listen to my body and never be ashamed to end the day and stage safe. Keep at it and enjoy the fun

I was just told today that the only thing left to stop the chronic pain because of my ankle is to remove it. I’m now waiting to have the surgery scheduled. Don’t know how I am suppose to feel about it.

Nerd question: How did Sunshine hold up? If you were continue to do this regularly, would you get a specialized socket/foot/ankle? Or one generally geared toward athletics? (I know from previous videos, they are not cheap!)
