Optician input over here: never ask your doctor what your pupillary distance is, they don’t know it. They know an estimate but that’s it. The person that’s really going to know is your optician/eyeglasses sales associate. We have specific devices called pupillometers that take that measurement with corneal reflections and it’s going to be the most exact measurement you get. You taking it yourself can come close to it but the device takes it in half millimeters! It is that precise. Also yes pair eyewear is AMAZING the practice I work at sells it and we all love them 🥰🥰🥰

I’m an optometry student and I have learned how to measure PD manually and using a pupillometer. Measuring it yourself could work, but the images perceived by your right and left eye are different (you can visualize this: hold up a finger or an object in front of you, fixate on it, and close your right eye, then close your left eye, did the location of your finger change? This disparity between the right and left contributes to our perception of depth), so make sure you’re closing an eye while lining up the tick mark on your ruler then repeat for your other eye. Also an incorrect PD induces prism resulting in a shift in the image you’re viewing especially for higher prescriptions according to Prentice’s formula. You should consult your eye doctor about your PD in the new glasses due to how it can affect your binocular vision.
