A couple good ideas, always fill the spa through the filter. This can help to prevent your pump from airlock. To keep your hot tub cover from becoming a concrete block always have a cover lifter on the spa by hanging the spa cover on the lifter it helps it to drain out the water. A teaspoon of powder dishwashing detergent n an 8 ounce spray bottle works good as a filter cleaner. And finally clear vinegar also works to flush out the lines from build up, just like cleaning your coffee pot. With the circuit breaker turned off, open the side cover on the equipment system and tighten up the lugs on the lead wires coming in to the hot tub this can keep you from having built up resistance on the lugs causing them to burn.

this might not be the smartest/most professional way to handle hot tub maintenance but when my mother was given one
(for medical reasons)
she would drain the water and leave it turned off when not actually using it.
most months she would just randomly fill it with the hose and give it awhile to heat up then use it a few times throughout that week before letting the water drain out again.
occasionally she’d ad a little bleach, cleaning agents in there to run through the lines over night but after that it was usually just turned off. lol
i was a kid at the time so i never really asked, but i know my mother didn’t make much money and doing this never caused the hot tub to break her wallet.
now that i’m an adult i miss that thing,
i never realized how privileged i was as a child to randomly week to week be able to go out late at night in the dead of winter and lay relaxed in 100 degree bubbling water and watch the snow fall from our back porch.
Very good times. :)

Have you considered doing a cedar hot tub cleaning and maintenance video? I’m new to this and I don’t want to ruin the wood with plastic maintenance techniques.

With regards to the tennis balls, how or what would you use to clean them? And how often would you change them for new ones etc?

@swimuniversity I have a 2009 Sundance Maxxus spa that has been sitting for a while now that is drained, but with about 1/2 foot of water that has gone green and has dead insects floating with dirt... It hasn’t ran in about two years. It does power on and I know the jets and everything work, but before I refill it and power it on again I want to clean it and disinfect it. I want to say the shell is made from fiberglass or acrylic? I want to know what can I use to disinfect it and clean out the pipes as well as clean the little metal like or chrome finish fixtures that are around the Jets? So far I Did drain the 1/2 foot of dirty water and used paper towels to get all that dirt and stuff out of the tub. I also used a magic eraser to get rid of most of the white water lines off the shell. What can I use to clean and disinfect the shell and metal like and plastic fixtures inside without damaging anything? As well as when I do fill it up and run it again, a cleaning solution that will go through the pipes so that I can disinfect since it hasn’t been running in a while? Thanks :)

After 4 years of trial and error I've gone exclusively to chlorine in my 350 gal. tub. I keep the concentration as close to 3 ppm as possible. The water clears up nicely within 24 hours. I also chose to do this to avoid the hassle of dealing with all the other additives.
My question is; is this a safe practice? Is anyone aware of any links between repeated chlorine exposure and illnesses?

After refilling my hot tub, with chemical adjustments my total alkalinity is perfect, but PH is too high. I know if I add sodium bisulfate it will lower my ph, but then I need to add sodium bicarbonate....but then it raises my ph. I'm testing this daily, but don't want to make daily adjustments. Any ideas would be helpful

10 Tips:
1. Place an old tennis ball to attract body oil, makeup, hair and etc
2. Use a bit of bleach in a bucket of water to clean the cover to remove the smell once a week/couple of times per week
3. Use a timer when refilling the water to avoid overflow
4. Run your hot tub during the off-peak hours
5. Use white vinegar to clean the hot tub
6. Turn off the air injector when adding chemical or trying to heat up the spa
7. Test your water every week
8. Drain the hot tub every 3-4 months or more if used often
9. Rinse down the filter weekly, monthly buy a filter degreaser to spray it and leave for 15 minutes, every 3-4 month when drain, soak the filter in a bucket of water overnight
10. Keep regularly used chemicals on hand

HELP! I am searching for advice on a great hot tub cover brand. All of the online companies can say they are the best but someone like Swim University should know which covers really hold up and keep the heating costs down in the winter! I don't want to know what to look for, I am looking for a specific brand that really is the best.
