So in example 1 the function machine is add 4 and multiply by 8. Part a asks you to find the output when the input is 5. First do 5 add 4 which is 9, then multiply 9 by 8 to give 72. For part b you are asked to find the output when the input is -7. Like part a, first add 4 to -7 to give -3. Then multiply -3 by 8 to give an output of -24.

For example 2, the function machine is a 3 operation function machine. First it says divide by 4, then add 2 and then multiply by 7. So for part a you need to find the output when the input is 40. 40 divided by 4 is 10, 10 add 2 is 12, and 12 times 7 is 84. So the output is 84. For part b, you are asked to find the output when the input is 12. 12 divided by 4 is 3, 3 add 2 is 5, and 5 time 7 is 35. So the output is 35.
