Charcoal Drawing | 'Forgotten Gate'

I was walking Basil recently and noticed this old broken gate at the edge of the field. I loved how nature had reclaimed the space that the gate occupied and offered us a glimpse into the landscape beyond.

I always try to search out these forgotten or less obvious views and landscapes.
I knew I had to draw it - so I did!

I hope you enjoy this charcoal drawing of the forgotten gate. I had a few technical issues from time to time with video and sound but I don't think they affect the quality too much. If you have any questions about the techniques or materials used please leave them in the 'Comments' section.

Bye for now - Andrew

Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

I can’t count how many times I was told to never blend my charcoal with my fingers. My instructors were great but you are a true artist. What a lovely drawing!

Thanks for sharing this awesome drawing and process! Really cool to see how you balance simplification/complexity, and the big decisions like leaving those trees out. It’s hard to see the forest through the trees when you’re in it. ;).

The way you've achieved that vintage look is incredible. Could stare at it for hours.

Wow!!! If I didn’t see you make it, I would think it’s a black and white film photo 😊. I missed Basil ❤

Excellent drawing. Thank you for sharing. The use of the sharp blade to create lines was a good lesson for me.

Hi Andrew, I really appreciate your charcoal work, whether you use water and casein or not. I like seeing the different techniques and tricks you invent to make your tools perform at their best, so much so that in some parts they look like anything but charcoal. Some of these works remind me of good chalcographic engravings in which you find bold blacks, total whites and a whole range of half tones. Thanks for the videos you share. Martha

Yet another amazing and beautiful drawing! So interesting to watch you do this. Glad you left the trees out; they are really lovely in the photo but agree the drawing works better without them as we’re not distracted from your amazing forgotten gate.
