On February 17, 2022, the Reimagining World Order (RWO) research community at Princeton University (PIIRS) hosted Matthew Specter (UC Berkeley) for the third meeting of its World Order Colloquium this year. Doctor Specter presented his new book, "The Atlantic Realists: Empire and International Political Thought Between Germany and the United States" (Stanford 2022). The current crises of liberal order, and the alleged return of great power competition, do not vindicate a return to the traditions called “realist” in international affairs. Matthew Specter argues that modern IR realism emerged from a century-long US-German dialogue about the nature of power-politics, geopolitics and the prerogatives of empire. Specter’s re-reading of the making of modern realism stresses its origins in inter-imperial competition between Germany and the US at the fin de siecle and the ideological blindspots, myths and ironies that have accompanied realism’s ascent as paradigm and discourse in international politics.
