I actually spoke to this guy at fos, and he told me this story. He had a test for f1 3 weeks later, and he had to hide the rib injury. Lovely guy and spoke to anyone.

Without the downforce, maybe they'd break more than just ribs when the car totally loses grip

What not mentioned is during this era the group c cars were ground effect cars, so they ran extremely stiff suspension and rode close to the ground to take advantage of having the most of the downforce come from the underside of the car

That’s not entirely true.
Yes the downforce helped break their ribs, but it was also due to a massive pothole on that exact turn.
