I'm gay and I'll be blunt; yes, many gay men "sound gay." No it's not politically correct, but it is correct. I sound more masculine, and nobody can tell by me voice, but most gay men you can tell. I don't care if it sounds mean, it is true. In the end we are all people, lets treat each other as such no matter how we sound.

This is a question I've actually often pondered. Out of the (approximately a dozen) gay men that I've been friends/acquaintances with, only one couldn't be immediately pegged by the sound of his voice. He's also the one that came out latest in life (18).

Ok, so I'm obviously by no means an expert on sexual development or anything. But I do have first hand experience being homosexual. I'd just like to combat the notion that "sounding gay" is a learned trait and that it coincides with the notion being gay is a learned behavior. In my younger years I randomly started developing more feminine qualities. I will say I'm not as feminine as some, I'm also not hyper masculine by any means, and that being said that doesn't mean anything is wrong with the amazing gay men who are quite feminine. However, I deeply believe that sexuality is developed. Hetero or homo. I randomly started "acting gay" (posture, interests, voice) long before I even knew what homosexuality was and long before my first sexual attraction to another male. I had literally no control over these behaviors developing. It wasn't until a couple years later in 5th grade that I looked at s guy for the first time and thought, wow, I think he's kind of cute. And then suppressed it.

I suppose this only focuses on Americans? Or at least English speaking countries?
Would love to see a more international view on this, because here in the Netherlands I barely hear someone 'sounding gay'. That's why I wonder if it's the English language that 'invites' the pronunciations to sound that way, although I wouldn't know why or how.

A big part of me wants to say "FUCK what you sound like. Be proud of who you are..and if other people don't like it then fuck them too." But then a smaller part of me says Margaret Cho was right..even thinking or worrying about this is part of a pattern of self hatred and anxiety, and Dan Savage was right about worrying your voice will give you away and you will be persecuted. However..and I don't know if this is due to being middle-aged now..I no longer give a fuck and just accept others as they are and hope they will do me the same favor.

I'm gonna be honest, sure I've seen some guys with not that much bass in their voice or whatever, maybe sounding a bit feminine. But I honestly thought it was just kinda part of the personality for certain gay people, never thought of it as being a natural part of their vocal chords. And I'm not trying to be offensive here this is me geniuenly having no clue.

I agree with the idea that sound of voice is not the same as identification with a sexual identity but not inside of any agenda to promote gay rights. The movie should be focussing on the fact you shouldn't be mistreat people because of how they sound(well, mistreat people for that matter). I could see scenarios where a person could justify bad behaviour by saying I don't hate that person because they are gay, I am discriminating against this person because I hate their voice. Which of course goes back to what idea you have for basing thinking it is bad i.e that gender is meant to look and sound a certain way. And you can't say say I just don't like it as a valid reason. At the same time gay culture has to critique itself by saying there is no one version of what it sounds to be gay. And I would suspect there are many in the lifestyle who believe it is.

I like not sounding "gay." It's not because I'm ashamed of it I just I don't feel it's me. When I was younger and sounded more gay than I do now it was very frustrating because it gave off an image that wasn't true.
