Are you concerned about the potential grain shortages? Consider planting quinoa as an alternative to some of the grain products that you might potentially consume. Quinoa, while technically not a grain, is often used as a rice substitute and packs a whopping 8 grams of plant protein per 1 cup of cooked quinoa. It is a great option as many people are not able to grow rice. The other nice thing is that quinoa can be added to the pantry to give you more food options during the fall and winter months. In this video, I show you how I planted quinoa and started it in soil blocks.

Today planting serviceberry trees, 1 marionberry, 1 tayberry, cherry trees, cherryplum trees, want to try growing amaranth for chickens, planting the servic berries near what will become a chicken pen area so that spare berries drop into the pen. I am studying how to set up cages around my plants so the chickens can't scratch them and tear them up. I don't let them run free but they do sometimes escape

Hey there - Amaranths are wonderful crops! The root balls are very wide, but not "aggressive" (like taproots). I think the cardboard weed barrier is what caused them to fall over later in the season. You need a deep, established soil layer that will not shift when the wind blows against the plants. Try a few plugs up the slope toward the fence! They will compete well with the grass (and the grass roots will help tangle and reinforce the root balls), just mark their locations so you know where they are early on. 👍

This is my first year gardening and I'm learning a ton! I have some Cherry Vanilla Quinoa seeds that I want to plant along the fence in my yard.... I don't know if I have enough room to space them out 18 inches apart and still get a good amount of plants in. I have to measure things out and see.

I'm also going to plant beans and determinate tomatoes. This way I can focus on production this year and next year I can experiment by trying the indeterminate tomato varieties I got.

Thanks for the video.
