One time, I was applying for a job, and I marked white just to see what would the lady reviewing the apps flipped through mine, saying everything looked fine but suddenly stopped and said, "ummm, you'll have to fix this. It's not right!" So I asked her "which part?!"Fully knowing where this was going! She said, " on ethnicity, you marked white. You can't do that" I almost fell over and wanted to scream all at the same time... but instead, I calmly asked her, " what do you mean, I CAN'T?" she said you CAN'T mark white, if you're not white! I got upset and explained to her that I was both native and white. I'm HALF WHITE! She then said, " well you don't LOOK white, so you can't mark that box!" Needless to say, it turned into a big argument, and I ended up just walking out. I didn't want to work for any company that was going to treat me this way solely based on the color of my skin!!

There are actually not people at a university that say, “oh they’re black; I’m just going to let them in.” Their academic achievements are heavily weighted. Just because she speaks fast and confidently doesn’t mean that she’s correct or “owns” anyone.
