SpaceX Launch Creates Mesmerizing Spiral Shape Over Hawaii

SpaceX launched a GPS satellite for the US Space Force on January 18th, and shortly after a spiral shape was seen over Hawaii by the Subaru Telescope. The spiral is believed to be related to the launch and is likely caused by the upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket venting unneeded fuel during its descent into the ocean. This is not the first time such a spiral has been seen after a SpaceX launch, similar patterns have been observed in the past. The company has sent five missions to space in the first 19 days of 2023 and if the pace continues, it could send 96 rockets aloft by the end of the year, weather and technical factors permitting.
