My ex copied my hobbies, jobs I worked, and some of my conversational traits. I had a roommate that did the same down to copying my body language in their pictures. At one point 90% of the things they posted on their Facebook was indirectly about me. It creeped me out so much I deactivated my Facebook for a while.

Lack of character traits and basic common decency were my first indicators. It was Christmas Eve 2001, on the radio was a report on a house fire that claimed an infant and seriously injured the four remaining family members.

He looked at me and said, "I know that guy. It's okay he didn't want those kids anyway."

I have never been more appalled! How do we brush these things off?

I worked for a politician who did EXACTLY what HG describes re the holiday in Italy. This guy would steal other people’s experiences and pass them off as his own all the time. His big question was “What are you reading?” He would listen to the response and take all the person’s insights. He would then go to his next meeting with me in tow and ask them same question and tell the new person all about the previous person’s book, pretending he’s just read it and their insights were his own. I thought it was just sleazy politician behaviour but the man is clearly a narcissist (now I know what they are and can identify the behaviour)!

My father's construct was a loveable old buffer. He learned it from his mentor in evil and he did it very well.

My goodness! I have no doubt in my mind that my ex was a narc. He copied me so much 🙁 when his mask slipped the creature it showed was a monster and nothing of what he had created to ensnare me in the first place. That was his real self, that dark figure of a man. Creepy as hell! Thank you HG, your work is amazing

For example I love classical music, I know he doesn’t, but after we got together he pretended he was very into it 😏

Wow! Fascinating. I have been confused by this and thought surely not. But yes it is real. Thank you H. G. However I can't help but think it very, very sad. It must be tragic to feel so empty other people need to complete you. A Frankenstein monster really. Not you H. G. obviously you know exactly what you're doing and are in complete control. Still . . . . .

Character trait aquisition is like the twilight zone. There is no type constancy. A narcissist can switch between overt and vulnerable. They can get stuck in the middle, being unable to make the switch.

This was fascinating. So to fill the huge voids within and propel himself into ever more strategic positions, the narcissist is accumulating more and more ever diverse and advantageous shards, fragments, and pieces of appealing character traits, experiences, stories, talents, hobbies, successes, etc, from OTHERS whom they observe or interact with. And this is for the sole purpose of incorporation into this ever expanding puzzle of their own of like an actor increasing his repertoire of characters that he can act out, in quantity and quality, thereby enhancing his options in the entertainment industry of movie making. Professional character acting requires astute observation, insight, mirroring, practice, memory, repetition, shape shifting and fluidity as well.

This reminds me of Matt Damon’s character in the Talented Mr Ripley. He literally tried to become Dickie Greenleaf (played by Jude Law). I’ve had this done to me and it’s such an odd thing to witness and definitely feels like a violation. They want your soul to suck out and put in their own psyche. Ultimately Damon’s character has to destroy dickie to make the illusion complete

At first my narcissist insulted all of the clothing i wore all the time, but in a very backhanded way, then she started buying similar clothing to what I wore. She did this deep past the time when she threw me away, it wasn't until I cut her off that she changed her style, and every week had a new style to her, even mimicking another girl who is very attractive, to the point that another female pointed out how similar she looked, and the reaction was one of great pride. Now she looks like a bum in flannel, I can only assume she is dating a bum.

The upper lesser type B's mother had as her DP : To copy somebody else is a waste of who you are.
Now I understand why. She must have witnessed it all her life.

Do unaware narcissists consciously know that the traits are not theirs, yet use them anyway, or do they actually plant it into their brains as an actual memory? For example, my mother will tell me about something that happened to her that indeed happened to me and I’d told her about earlier- maybe years.
I suppose my real curiosity is if these acquisitions were stripped away, what would remain? Is it like a standard vehicle with each acquisition being an upgrade in some way?

HG, do the accumulated character traits fall away upon the IPPS escaping? Ie....all those aspects of me she stole? I'm assuming vicinity has to be maintained to keep that facade shard in tact? Thankyou for your fastidious insights 🙏
