80 years ago and the places are very similar today. So many places in Europe are where fierce battles took place and men died and today people are walking, driving or eating lunch as if nothing happened in those very spots. Very surreal. I cannot imagine. Such hallowed ground.

His name was Roy Dotson. He was a heavy MG crew member in Europe, landing D+3. His brother was killed in the Pacific earlier. He was guarding prisoners just captured when he was stabbed in the leg by an SS soldier who hid a knife. He shot the man with his .45 immediately. His captain wanted to know what was going on after hearing the gunshot. After showing his Capt. the blood running down his leg nothing further was said. This is just 1 of too many to remember stories from WW2 vets while working at the VAMC for 30. RIP, Roy.

I love how the exterior of the buildings have been restored exactly like the originals were.

A better comparison could be made if the pictures were side by side

If buildings could tell stories, Wow! People walk past these places everyday probably with their heads in their mobile phones not even imagining what happened where they’re walking!

Sad that the rebuilt wall at 2:54 (behind the white car) was not able to include the white stripes of the rest of the building. Great video!

My father spent a year in a luft stalag and he was one of the kriegies who boxed for cigarettes and chocolate bars.

We still have one of the fight cards where he’s scheduled to box, while another bout that day would feature a guy named Donald Bevans, who went on to write a play and movie about the camp.

Stalag 17.

There is a knocked out Sherman on the road to Notre Dame du mont in Marseille, left in place as a memorial.

One picture showed a German armored vehicle destroyed I believe when a City in France was liberated then the today picture showed a car parked where the German armored vehicle once stood stopped in its tracks, the car was a Volkswagen 😅 one German vehicle for another.
