Everybody thinks 'just go 9 inch!' when you need a stronger diff. But they dont realise they are bloody heavy rear axles, I mean have you ever tried to pick one up?you dont always need one for every application. They were a truck diff originally from the late 50s anyway, Ford needed a rear axle that would handle the grunt of the Sideoiler 427s in the lightweight Fairlanes in the early 60s, and they didnt want to spend the time and money developing a new axle, so they just grabbed what they had available already in their lineup, which was the 9 inch..

Hey Jim! TIP! I saw you stripping that mustang Quarter Pannell with an 7"', 8" or 9" DA ("Mud hog", "Bondo Buster"). Using the edges like that even just ever so lightly ruins the bearings ASAP. I destroyed one of mine quickly, lesson learned. It was never true strait again. TIP! 3M makes a disk referred to as a Sticky Back Feather Edger, about 1.5 inches thick 7 or 8 inch diameter for a light weight air grinder etc. great for stripping. Super fast with 36 or even 80 grit sticky. I use an old style air buffer with mine. There hard to find, but Amazon was carrying them (Old Stock) just recently. You might check it out, You will love using it instead. Just a friendly tip.

Forget all that work swapping rear ends. Just drill out the holes a bit larger and the Explorer backing plate will bolt to the 8” or 9” axle flanges, which lets you use all the stock Explorer rear disc brakes.

Going over and redoing someone’s poor mud work is one of my least favorite things to do.I commend you guys for bringing in that mustang to make it right!

The 53 chev has a late 90s Chevy truck console in it that makes things a little nicer!

I do not get the thumbs downs, always a few ones…. Everybody has their right to express how their view on things, that’s all right . The thumbs down are just not deserved here in my humble point of view, how can you thumb down a guy like Barney
