People don't use messengers because they're good or bad, beautiful or ugly, secure or insecure. They use them cause their friends are there.

People don't use Telegram because it's private, people use it because it's the only messenger that has channels

The hard part is getting other people to use it.

Telegrams private chats ARE in fact end-to-end encrypted.
Regular (ie. non-private) chats ARE NOT end-to-end encrypted. They are chillin' on some Telegram-server and can be restored to your device at any time.

If you don't use a feature - don't complain about it not being used.

1. dont use phone
2. dont use any of the known messengers
3. use old, time tested stuff to communicate with your peer
4. always assume that peer has been compromised and you are showing your text, voice or video to 3rd party
5. have a plan B

Just some observations: not everybody who uses Telegram use for direct 1 to 1 communication. In Telegram there these public channels, which many people who were recently censored and banned from Twitter and other social media, use twitter as a alternative. In other words, Telegram have some more social media like-aspects, which Whatsapp doesn't have. So the privacy card doesn't necessarily apply to all use cases of Telegram. And Telegram truth be told, doesn't censor even 1% of compared to what youtube does.

Actually the main benefits of telegram are not privacy. Their clients are very high quality and a pleasure to use. Moreover, they have an open API, so you could write your own client were you would control exactly what is sent to the telegram servers. And people mostly aware that their data is not end2end encrypted. Even telegram itself says that in their FAQ. Also they provide a great service which works really well and has some awesome features like an unlimited cloud storage for free! So, Telegram is nice, but for the slightly different reasons than the most people think.

People aren't using Telegram to send messages. They are using it to follow people making posts like an rss feed.

Actually, XMPP and Matrix are not out of the box end to end encrypted. You have to set it up manually

To be fair, there is end-to-end encryption in Telegram that can be turned on. It's just off by default.
Telegram also has other benefits in form of various news/information read-only channels. And also some sophisticated bots, for example for movie downloads.

For the purposes of chat it's better than WhatsApp or Signal, when configured correctly.
Of course, nothing beats self-hosted federated Matrix clusters, but the main problem is getting all your contacts to move there.

Many people do not use it for encryption, decentralization, or privacy. You have unlimited storage for free with a 1.5 GB cap per file. Now, tell me all the alternatives that are actually good and that do this **much better and in a more usable way**.
