I was looking for a video to show my 9 year old son in how the cello looks when being played and how beautiful it sounds, found your video basically by accident and was blown away by this performance!! I cried. This Nathan guy is amazing. He actually has FUN with the music. AND he's amazing at cello!!!! This kid is so cool! Seriously, this is a win at life :D

The mic he is using is a contact microphone, it picks up the vibrations of the cello underneath it much the same as a piezo works. It does not have a cardioid sound pattern as most mics you are familiar with do therefore it will not pick up any sound that is not either EXTREMELY loud or from a source that is in direct contact with the microphone.
