In this video I will be taking you to 17th century southern Mexico and Guatemala, where the Spanish conquistadors would find a very interesting civilization, the Mayans. Human sacrifice in the Mayan culture was the ritual offering of sustenance to the Gods. Blood would be viewed as a source of nourishment for the Mayan deities, so the sacrifice of a living being and by extension a human vessel was the ultimate offering to the Gods, but how did they do it?

Fyi, when they pulled out the heart they didnt go ‘through’ the chest and ribs. Obsidian blades are too fragile to make it through the chest. Instead what they did was go ‘under’ the ribs.

If you see a sacrificial stone its slightly curved. As the victim lies on the stone their abdomen would be opened, near the diaphram, just below the ribs. Then the priest would reach up and under the ribs to grab the heart.

The movie Road to El Dorado brought me here, although the movie is about the Aztec themselves. Their culture with the Mayans are very similar.

I went to Southern Mexico and I visited Chichen Itza. However I was a little to keen to chant the word Sacrifice, and I feel that my mom was a bit embarrassed. It was the shear awe I felt when I first arrived.

Are you talking about the Mayans or the Aztecs? For as far as I know the Mayans mostly held blood sacrifices by piercing the tongue or penis of a noble, priest or king. Only in the late period the sacrifices would increase because of famine caused by drought. That was mostly during the cult of Kukulkan in Chitzen Itza.
