THE ANNOTATIONS APPEAR NOT TO BE WORKING ANY MORE, SO IF YOU WANT THE LYRICS AND CHORDS, SEND ME YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND I WILL SEND YOU THE FILE I WORKED FROM, FROM MY OWN COLLECTION.

Recently I uploaded my version of John Brown's Body. At the time, I was aware of course that the tune was also the tune to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and intended to sing that too. However other requests came in and I forgot to do so. Now I have had a request from shadowsXelit for just that song, so here it is.
The following short history is available in Wikipedia:
"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is an American abolitionist song. The lyrics were written by Julia Ward Howe in November 1861 and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. It became popular during the American Civil War. Julia Ward Howe was the wife of Samuel Gridley Howe, the famed scholar in education of the blind. Samuel and Julia were also active leaders in anti-slavery politics and strong supporters of the Union.

I have just produced a book of songs under the title "50 Songs from the 'threelegsoman' collection". It is available as a printed book or as an eBook and can be found at:

The greatest line is "as he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free." Ive seen so many versions where they change it, but Im glad to see this man stayed true to the original artist.

You're an awesome old man! I hope you're still alive and enjoying your life! Awesome cover!

I'm glad that you used the old version, "let us die to make men free". So much more powerful and meaningful than the new "let us live to make men free" version most people use these days. The men singing this song were literally marching to their deaths to free the slaves. Or crush States Rights once and for all, depending on your point of view. Damn Yankees.

I can't listen to this song without thinking of the version my mum taught me that naughty kids at her school apparently used to sing in the 70s: "Glory glory hallelujah, teacher hit me with a ruler, the ruler snapped in half and the class began to laugh, and the band went marching on!"

Loved it! Great job and thanks for putting the chords up!

@Nightgaun7 Well, both are needed. If we don't live to make (and keep) men free, then the sacrifice of those who died was for nothing.
