Greg Walker's soulful voice was a perfect match for Santana.

Santana Band of this time period was exceptional "rocky, " rhythmic, funky and musically tight. With the breathtakingly fresh, unique and mesmerizing voice of Greg Walker; the power drumming of Graham Lear, and, David Margin's energetic bassing led by the incomparable Carlos Santana they came out swinging with their 1978 world tour as you can see and hear from this video taping of a live German event . When that 1978 tour made its way back to the U.S. I got to see them in Boston's Music Hall. Yep, that's how they looked, played and performed, pretty much, note gor note! I was about 12 - 16 feet from the stage towards the Percussion section of the band. Good Energy. And, lots of Great Music. Good Memories of a Good Time!

I was a concert hound since I was five years old, a long time ago. Easier to name who I didn't see versus who I did. I love that part of my life!

Lead vocalist Greg Walker did 3 stints in Santana, he first joined in late 1975 and sang on the Amigos album in 1976, they had a minor hit on that album with the song 'Dance Sister Dance'. He left/or was fired from the band in late October '76 and did not appear on the Festival album released in Jan 1977. He returned to the band by Feb '77 and appeared on the next album, the half live/half studio 'Moonflower', singing lead on the hit single 'She's Not There' which is a Zombies cover.

He stayed with the band through 1977 and 1978 and sang lead on the 'Inner Secrets' album, probably the bands most cohesive and most mainstream rock style album since the original three albums. While not a smash hit, it's a very good album, and sold about 700, 000 copies in it's original run. It features the hit single 'Well All Right' a Buddy Holly cover, as well as the live concert favorite 'Open Invitation'. Greg remained in the band for the support tour and then recorded vocals for a couple of tracks on Carlos Santana's solo album 'Oneness' in 1979. He was then let go from the Santana band again for unknown reasons and replaced by Alex Ligertwood.

In 1983 Greg returned for this third and final stint in Santana, singing lead on the tour to support Carlos' solo 'Havana Moon' album. It featured most of the members of Santana, as well as guest appearances by Booker T. Jones, Willie Nelson, and members of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Greg stayed on with the Santana band after that and Alex Ligertwood was brought back as well, they shared lead vocal duties on the 1984 tour, then on the following album, the very underrated 'Beyond Appearances' in 1985. Both vocalists remained in the band for the support tour in 1985 and it worked very well. However by 1986 both were gone. Alex would later return a couple more times, but Greg has never played with them since. I've spoken with people who played in Santana as well as some who worked in his crew and he apparently didn't like the fact that Greg had a lot of charisma and often would steal the spotlight (he's a large man, 6'5") and so he had a lot of stage presence. It's a real shame as he is in my opinion the best vocalist the band ever had.

Heavy metal legends Armored Saint just released a very decent version of this song. Give it a listen and you'll see they gave the song great respect while recording it.

Is there a moment there where Chris Solberg is pissed off that Carlos is not acknowledging him? Chris shakes his head and looks annoyed. For someone who is supposedly so ‘spiritual’ he went through a lot of excellent band members. Don’t get me wrong, I love Santana and have seen many of their concerts, but some of my favourite Santana members: Shrieve, Walker and Solberg, amongst others, didn’t seem to last long.
